The Asbestos Question — Read Before Anyone Scrapes
Texture applied before the mid-1980s can contain asbestos — harmless undisturbed, hazardous dry-scraped. If your ceiling predates 1985 and has never been tested, get a sample tested first: it's inexpensive and takes days. Positive means licensed abatement or encapsulating under a new layer of drywall (we can price that); negative — common, since many ceilings were re-textured later — means standard removal proceeds. We won't touch an untested pre-1985 ceiling, and you shouldn't let anyone else either.
How We Do It
- Seal the room. Floors, walls, and fixtures wrapped in plastic; the space contained. The mess is enormous by design — and it all leaves with us.
- Wet-scrape. Misting drops the dust and releases the texture in sheets without gouging what's underneath — which in Duluth is sometimes plaster, and we adjust technique accordingly.
- Skim coat everything. A scraped ceiling is not a finished ceiling. We skim the full surface to erase scraper marks, old joint bands, and plaster irregularities.
- Sand, inspect, prime. Checked under raking light — the same light your winter afternoons will use — then primed for ceiling paint.
