Every Duluth block has at least one: the top-floor ceiling with a tan ring that gets repainted each spring and returns each February, reliable as the smelt run. That's an ice dam at work, and the reason the cycle repeats is that the ceiling keeps getting fixed while the cause never does. Here's the whole picture — what's happening on your roof, what actually stops it, and how to repair the damage once.
The Machine on Your Roof
An ice dam is a heat-leak detector. Warm air escaping your living space into the attic warms the roof deck; snow melts from the bottom; the meltwater runs down until it hits the eaves — which hang past the warm house and stay frozen — and refreezes into a growing ridge of ice. Once the ridge is tall enough, new meltwater pools behind it, and pooled water does what shingles were never designed to resist: it travels uphill, under the laps, through the deck, and into your top-floor ceilings and exterior walls. The stain at the ceiling-wall line is the signature; by the time you see it, water has usually been visiting for a while.
What Doesn't Fix It
- Repainting the stain. Cosmetic, and temporary by definition.
- Roof raking. Genuinely helpful as harm reduction — less snow, less melt — but it's a chore, not a cure, and nobody rakes above the second story well.
- Heat cables. They melt drainage channels through the dam. Sometimes a reasonable band-aid on a problem roofline; never the underlying answer.
- New shingles alone. A roof replacement without air-sealing and insulation work rebuilds the same machine with fresher parts (though modern ice-and-water membrane at the eaves does limit the interior damage).
What Actually Fixes It
Air sealing and attic insulation. The dam exists because heat reaches the roof deck; stop the heat and the machine stops. In practice that means sealing the attic bypasses (top plates, light fixtures, the attic hatch, plumbing chases — old Duluth houses are generous with these) and insulating to modern depth, with ventilation that keeps the deck cold. It's an insulation contractor's project, often surprisingly affordable after utility rebates — and it usually pays for itself in heating bills whether or not you care about the ceiling.
Repairing the Ceiling — Once
With the cause addressed (or scheduled), the interior repair follows our standard order:
- Moisture check. A meter tells us how far the water traveled — along top plates and into wall cavities is common, and always farther than the stain suggests.
- Honest triage. Dry, firm, stained plaster or board gets sealed with stain-blocking primer and repainted. Soft, sagging, or crumbling material comes out — saturated gypsum and released plaster keys don't recover.
- Dry, verify, rebuild. The cavity closes only when it reads dry; soaked insulation gets replaced — and since the ceiling is open anyway, this is the perfect moment to upgrade the insulation that caused the dam in the first place. Then new surface, finished and blended to the invisible-patch standard.
